The Kashmiri People Versus the Indian State

A sweeping social media gag; dozens of Kashmiri female students defiantly protestingIndian military troop presence; a Kashmiri man tied to an Indian military vehicle as a human shield against stone-pelting protesters. These are just some of the latest stories to come out of the Kashmir Valley in India's north-eastern state of Jammu and Kashmir, also known as Indian-administered Kashmir.
Since 1990 Jammu and Kashmir has been under suffocating Indian military presence under statutes such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and the Public Safety Act.
Jammu and Kashmir has three divisions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. The heart of the repression and frequent curfews has been in the Kashmir Valley, which has a 97% Muslim population and is home to the state's summer capital Srinagar. In 27 years, more than 70,000 Kashmiris have been killed and many more have been injured or arrested in Indian military crackdowns.
Protests for independence or azadi in the Valley has been active since 1989, but has taken a renewed dimension in the last year since the death of a 22-year-old. In April 2016, Burhan Wani, a young social media star, supporter of a free Kashmir, and “the poster boy” of Kashmir’s new wave of armed struggle, was killed in a counterinsurgency operation. After his killing, Kashmiri journalist and New York Times writer Basharat Peer posted on Facebook:
Internet has been banned. Curfew has been imposed. Phones can't be reached. The mighty Indian state might have killed him but they haven't won. A 22-year-old in his death has shaken you

Woman gives birth in restaurant restroom; baby offered free food for life and a guaranteed job when she's 16

A woman took an unplanned bathroom break at Chick-Fil-A and ended up delivering her baby there in the restaurant's restroom. Falon Griffin began having contractions on Tuesday. She and her husband Robert Griffin made a stop on their way to San Antonio, Texas’ University Hospital to meet up with a family friend at a local Chick-Fil-A store so they could drop off their two older daughters with them before going to deliver their baby. As they stopped, Falon realized she needed to use the bathroom. It was after 10 p.m. at the time and Chick-Fil-A was closed but the couple banged on the windows to try and get the staff’s attention because Falon didn’t feel like she could wait until they got to the hospital. Falon was allowed inside while her husband waved goodbye to the kids. Afterward, Robert went inside the store and was told by the manager that his wife was “screaming” in the restroom, only for him to learn that she was in the process of giving birth. Rapper Offset arrested for Gun and Drug Possession in Georgia (see mugshot)

Offset  of the hip-hop trio  Migos  and the husband of hip-hop star  Cardi B , was arrested on Friday afternoon July 20th on gun and drug charges after he and his bodyguard were pulled over outside of Atlanta.  The rapper, whose real name is  Kiari Kendrell Cephus , and his bodyguard,  Senay Gezahgn , were pulled over in  Jonesboro, Georgia , for the illegal lane change when Clayton County police searched his 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera and found three guns and less than one ounce of marijuana and over $107,000 in cash, according to Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB. The 26-year-old who is already on probation for a 2015 arrest on drugs and weapons charges, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a weapon during a crime. He also faces misdemeanor charges for marijuana possession and making an improper lane change.  His bodyguard,  Gezahgn , 27, was also charged with possession of less than one ounce...

The 74-year-old father of Super captain, Mikel Obi, Chief Michael Obi, says he hasn't spoken to his footballer son in 5 years. 19-year-old man stabs 18-year-old girlfriend to death in Edo

The police in Edo state have arrested a 19-year-old man identified as Junior Baba, for stabbing his 18-year-old girlfriend, Matilda Odiri, to death at his home on Akugbe Street in Benin metropolis in the Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State on July 7th. According to reports, Matilda had arrived Baba's house on the day of the incident with the intention of sleeping over. She then accused him of being unfaithful to her as she suspected he was keeping another girl. There arguement degenerated into a fight and in the process, Baba picked up his kitchen knife and stabbed Matilda. She died on the spot. Realising what he'd done, Baba carried her body and dumped it by the roadside. He then fled to the Auduwawa area of Benin city where he was apprehended. Confirming his arrest, the state commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, said Baba has since confessed to committing the crime. He added that the suspect would be charged to court soon....
